The other item that jumped out at me was the "body tracking." This idea seems to have such a great possibility in giving instant feedback and assessment to a learner. Now it does seem very physical in nature, so I'm not sure how it will affect cognitive learning. I do see it being a great tool in helping to promote proper physical technique and muscle memory. My wife things it could be used really well in the medical field and with physical therapy. I have to say I agree with her.

I am very intrigued by the us of AI in developing educational tools. The ELM-ART system sounds very interesting as it is a web based adaptive interactive text book. Because it is web based it can also be constantly updated unlike text books which have numerous editions. Think of all the money college students could save by not having to purchase a different edition of a book every semester! I really liked the idea of an application assisting a student and understanding when it may or may not be ready to test or quiz on a subject. The use of AI seems to be one avenue in which learning will be come more individualized and learner centered.

I like that you pointed out the possibilities of ELM-ART being web based. So many software programs are going that way just because of the ease of updates and access.
I found your textbook comment most amusing since it is a sore subject for most students. I can't tell you how many old textbooks I have lying around because a new edition came out so I couldn't sell it back.
I agree that the issue of AI has great potential for individualized lesson plans.
My imagination runs wild with the idea of body tracking. Maybe I could have a little chip in me that tells me what is wrong with me instead of having to go to the doctor constantly. I am also somehow reminded of my Wii...
Matt,
Your wife had a great idea! The body tracking would be perfect for the medical field.
I love your idea about saving us college students so much money for books. Could you write the president of the university on that one?

I too would love to switch over to online textbooks, they can be so costly as we all know, and you would definilty have the correct edition!
I like your idea of the online text book. However, as a son of a college instructor I found out that publishing companies and universities have agreements that "forces" (lack of better word) instructors/professors to requires a certain text and the newest edition of that text. Now, I don't know if this is true everywhere, yet it was certain true where my father teaches. Anyways, I still love your idea, but sure they will charge the same price for access to the book. Also, I liked your wife's idea for the use of body tracking.
Matthew—
My wallet also really likes the idea of not having to buy soon-to-be-outdated textbooks that no one will buy back. The book business is so lucrative though, I think it will take a while to see it come into being. The exception might be the smaller, independent publishers. I would miss my paper copies with the notes in the margins, Post-it® flags, and different colored highlighting for different ideas/meanings. Sigh!
Body tracking does seem to currently be more of a physical thing. It does work on muscle memory, and the brain is a big muscle… hmm. I absolutely think it has great potential in the medical field.

Matthew,
Lets start a revolution!!! If the book isn't on-line, I'm not using it!!! (Just kidding).
I have always liked going to sites where I can read the books on-line. Like you say, there is always a new edition and most of the time it is for no good reason. This way you are not stuck with a bunch of outdated books.
I must admit, because of the fact that I would only get pennies back for my books, I never sold any of them back after the first semester freshman year. I figured that I am poor and now is the only time I will get to build my library (luckily I was and English and Theater major so these things are usually timeless).
I do like the idea of being able to help individual learners more with individualized lesson plans using AI.
